I wanted to provide you an update regarding Violent crime, which members around this area have highlighted as an issue of concern on the Met Engage priority survey. SECTION 60
Please be advised that Section 60 and Section 60AA Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994 powers have been authorised for the Notting Hill Carnival footprint and surrounding areas to help prevent serious violence and the carrying of weapons.
The authority will be in place:
• 10:00hrs Sunday 30 August 2026 to 02:00hrs Monday 31 August 2026
• 10:00hrs Monday 31 August 2026 to 02:00hrs Tuesday 1 September 2026
The decision is based on intelligence, historical crime data and ongoing concerns regarding weapon-enabled violence, gang-related activity and serious disorder associated with the event.
These powers allow officers to stop and search individuals without reasonable grounds within the designated area and require the removal of face coverings used to conceal identity.
Partners are asked to share this information with staff, residents and businesses as appropriate. The powers form part of a wider safety plan aimed at reducing violence, protecting communities and ensuring that the vast majority of attendees can enjoy Carnival safely. Officers will be briefed to use these powers lawfully, proportionately and respectfully.
